Are energy efficient light bulbs better for the environment? I’m not going to keep you in suspense because the answer is a great big “yes!” Energy efficient light bulbs are so much better for the environment than other kinds of bulbs. So let’s find out how much better, and why…
Why are energy efficient light bulbs better for the environment?
There are a few different ways energy efficient light bulbs are better for the environment.
First of all, being energy efficient means they use less energy. Less energy being used means less energy being produced, easing the pressure on the environment that comes from making energy.
Reducing your carbon footprint and your energy usage is one of the biggest things individual households and people can do to benefit the environment.
Energy efficient bulbs use so much less energy than their traditional counterparts. They use about a tenth of the energy of traditional bulbs. For producing the same amount of light you use only 6W of energy with an energy efficient light bulb as took 60W with a traditional bulb.
That’s a huge reduction and is down to how much more efficiently the energy saving bulb uses the energy. Traditional bulbs waste the majority of their electricity by turning it into heat. But energy efficient bulbs are noticeably cooler and put all that saved energy into light, so they need much less.

Secondly, energy efficient bulbs last much longer. They don’t have the same delicate filament as traditional bulbs. This filament is super-heated and cooled every time you switch the light on and off. After about a thousand hours of use, it just breaks.
Energy efficient LEDs are completely different. There’s no filament being baked every time and you can get up to 50,000 hours of use before they begin to grow dim. That’s one energy efficient LED instead of 50 traditional bulbs – less energy but also less manufacture, materials, shipping and other processes that damage the environment.
Energy efficient light bulbs aren’t just better for the environment, they are better for your energy bills too. Using less energy means less money spent on your energy bills. And the longer lifespan means you are replacing them less often.
